Over the past weeks, a group of Maltese youths, accompanied by the Augustinian friars Fr Mario Abela OSA and Fr Terence Spiteri OSA, lived a missionary experience in Kenya, placing their time, talents and energy at the service of poor families and local communities.
The mission sought not only to provide material assistance, but also to offer friendship, closeness and hope to those who live in difficult circumstances. Among the various activities carried out were the construction of houses for families in need, the distribution of food and essential supplies, the painting of classrooms and the planting of trees in local schools.
Alongside these projects, the volunteers spent time with children and students, sharing moments of joy, learning and fraternity. Through these encounters, the young participants experienced firsthand that true mission is not simply about giving things, but about giving oneself.
The initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of many people in Malta, whose donations and prayers transformed solidarity into concrete action and allowed numerous families to enjoy a more dignified life.
For Fr Mario Abela and Fr Terence Spiteri, experiences such as these are also a witness to the beauty of the Augustinian vocation: a life centred on community, service and the search for God through love of neighbour. Missionary experiences offer young people the opportunity not only to help those in need, but also to reflect on their own calling and to discover the joy that comes from dedicating one’s life to others.
As this year’s mission comes to an end, the Augustinian friars invite other young people who are searching for meaning, fraternity and service to consider participating in next year’s missionary experience and to discover how giving oneself to others can transform both the lives of those who receive and of those who serve.
