Ordinary General Chapter 2025: Week 2

Day 7:
On 8 September 2025, after participating the previous day in the canonization of Saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, the Chapter resumed with Mass for the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and then met in regional groups to discuss the upcoming election for a new Prior General. Outgoing Prior General Fr. Alejandro Moral Anton formally ended his term by handing over the seal of authority, after which the election process began with an invocation of the Holy Spirit. Three rounds of voting were held, but none produced the required majority, leading to a suspension of the process until the following day.

Day 8:
On 9 September 2025, the Chapter began with Mass and continued to discuss vocations, formation, and the Constitutions, highlighting the need for concrete proposals, greater support for emerging regions, and creative use of digital media for vocational promotion. In the afternoon, missionary reports were shared from Cuba, Pakistan, and West Africa, underlining both challenges and opportunities for Augustinian presence. The day culminated in the election of Fr. Joseph Farrell OSA as the new Prior General, followed by solemn prayers, fraternal homage, and a celebratory dinner in his honour.

Day 9:
On 10 September 2025, the friars celebrated the feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine with Mass in the morning. The newly elected Prior General, Fr. Joseph Farrell, assumed the presidency of the Chapter and highlighted key themes for reflection: vocations and formation, Augustinian studies, communion of goods, and structures that sustain community life. Regional groups proposed names for the general council and other offices. Afterwards, commissions were formed to address studies, formation, and resources for the Order. The day’s discussions focused on inter-circumscriptional novitiates, centers of study, scholarships, and uniting academic excellence with Augustinian spirituality, concluding with reflections on communion of goods and evening prayer.

Day 10:
On 11 September 2025, the Chapter began with Mass, and afterwards the morning assembly focused on reports about the economy and temporal goods, highlighting the need for transparency, trust, accountability, and professional support in managing resources. Afternoon discussions turned to community life, apostolic activity, and mission, stressing prayer, ongoing formation, Augustinian identity, coordination of younger friars, and balancing pastoral commitments with common life. The day concluded with reflections on renewal, prophetic leadership, and collaboration beyond circumscriptions, ending with a recitation of St. Augustine’s City of God at the Augustinianum.

Day 11:
On 12th September 2025, the morning session focused on the study of the Order’s structures and proposals for renewal, highlighting the need for stronger awareness of belonging to the Order, equitable resource distribution, and strategic organization of international presence. Reports were presented on the vicariates of Panama, Costa Rica, and Peru, while the Prior General proposed names for key leadership offices. In the afternoon, the capitulars met with presidents of Augustinian nuns’ federations from Spain and Italy, who emphasized mutual support, deeper knowledge of one another, and greater visibility of the Augustinian charism. The day concluded with the election of Fr. Alexander Lam OSA as Vicar General, alongside Fr. Kevin dePrinzio OSA and Fr. Martin Davakan OSA as General Assistants.

Day 12:
On 13th September 2025, the morning session consisted of discussion and exchange of ideas with the commission for the laity, which is responsible for encouraging and supporting the secular fraternities, lay groups, and also youth groups throughout the world. Afterwards, the voting continued for the General Assistants and other offices that will be working together with the Prior General. The mid-morning session concluded with the election of Fr. Frederick Comendador, Fr. James Wambugu, and Fr. Benjamín García Franco as General Assistants. The other offices include Fr. Javier Perez Barba as Secretary General, Fr.
