50th Anniversary of the Consecration of the Church of St. Nicholas in Tarxien

On Saturday, May 10, the Augustinian Community in Tarxien organized a celebration of Thanksgiving on the 50th anniversary of the Consecration of the Church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Tolentine, which took place on May 10, 1975. The mass presided over by the Prior Provincial, began with the incense of the twelve crosses that had been anointed with sacred oil by Archbishop Mgr Mikiel Gonzi on the day of the Consecration. Rather  than the Church building, the Augustinian community gave thanks to the Lord for those religious and lay people who over the years have been part of the story of this community and those who today gather in this temple to celebrate their faith. The mass was than followed by a moment of fellowship for all those present.

After the hardworking priest Fr Ä wann Mamo had left his property in Tarxien to the Augustinian Friars, the first Augustinian community began to serve in a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas of Talentine. A priory for the friars was built on the same site, and other spaces began to serve as a school. In the meantime, an Oratory for the youth of the surrounding area had also been founded. In the sixties, the need to build a new church was felt and on 23 April 1967 the Prior Provincial Father Ugolin Gatt O.S.A. blessed the first stone of the building.

On 18 April 1970, the new Church was inauguration and blessed by the Assistant General of the Augustinian Order Father Riccardo Quacquarelli O.S.A. A few years later, exactly 50 years ago, the Church was then consecrated by Archbishop Mgr. Mikiel Gonzi on 10 May 1975. The church was renovated again in 2005, on the occasion of the centenary of St. Nicholas of Tolentino
