On Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th March, the Augustinian Institute, in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology and the Foundation for Theological Studies of the Archdiocese of Malta, organised the 26th Saint Augustine Lecture. The Saint Augustine Lecture is an annual event in which internationally renowned professors are invited to present various themes, usually related to Patristic or Christian Antiquity.
This year’s two lectures were given by Dr Marie Pauliat, who is a professor of Christian Antiquity on texts and history at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. The subject she addressed on Wednesday in the session held at the University of Malta was; Women deacons in Antiquity as an extremely complex theme. The lecture presented a clear picture of what we know about the presence of female Deacons in Antiquity and the challenges and questions that such a theme pose in modern times. On Thursday the lecture was then held at The Santa Rita Priory and spoke about Mary as a Feminine ideal and the Augustinian response to this.
Between May and June this year the Program of the Augustinian Institute continues with another six session course on the Soliloquies of Saint Augustine.
