100 Years Since the Death of Augustinian Bishop Monsignor Giovanni Maria Camilleri

On Thursday, 4 December, Augustinian Bishop Monsignor Giovanni Maria Camilleri was commemorated on the 100th anniversary of his death. The Bishop of Gozo, Anton Teuma, presided over a Mass at the Gozo Cathedral together with Augustinian religious and several other priests.

Bishop Giovanni Maria served the Diocese of Gozo for 35 years, between 1889 and 1924.

He founded three parishes – San Lawrenz, Fontana, and Għasri – and consecrated various churches. After much dedication and effort, he laid the first stone of the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. He had a deep love for and worked tirelessly on behalf of the Seminary, convened the First Diocesan Synod in 1903, and carried out regular Pastoral Visits throughout the Diocese.
