Restoration of the Bell Tower of St. Mark’s Church

The restoration of the imposing bell tower of the conventual Church of St. Mark in Rabat was finally completed. St. Mark’s Church is located right at the beginning of Rabat in front of the entrance to Mdina, and its appearance is part of the picturesque skyline of the Old City. The bell tower which is being given back its elegant and beautiful appearance, was built in 1910.

This restoration was carried forward thanks to the collaboration of the Department of Public Works. In addition to the restoration, a new low-consumption lighting system was also installed to illuminate and highlight the aesthetics and architecture of this bell tower, as well as a system of protection from storms and lightning.

The Convent and Church of St. Mark of the Augustinian Friars, constitute one of the most beautiful buildings in Malta. Although the bell tower was built relatively recently, the Church – a prototype of the Co-Cathedral of St. John – was built by the architect Ġlormu Cassar in the 16th Century. The convent was demolished and rebuilt in the 18th Century by the Architect Andrea Belli.
