In a ceremony held by the Augustinian Oratory Past Pupils Organizing Committee in Tarxien and on the initiative of the same group, a monument to commemorate Fr Hilary Tagliaferro OSA and his work throughout the years was inaugurated tonight at Joanne Gardens. Born in Tarxien on 18 October 1934, this celebration intends to celebrate his 90th birthday.
As a young Augustinian friar and priest, Fr Hilary served as director of the Oratory right in his home village of Tarxien. Meanwhile he was already engaged in sports, where he served as a coach and sports journalist. His career in sports over the years led him to contribute in various sports structures and particularly in the establishment of the Sports Writers Association and the Educational Sports Centre. In the local Church, he was also part of the establishment of what we know today as the Diocesan Sport Commission. In the year 2000, together with the Augustinian community where he then lived in Paceville, he worked hard to transform part of the priory into the Millennium Chapel Complex where he still works today. Over the years he has also worked with young people with addictions and even with prisoners.
We wish Fr Hilary much more health and work in the Lord’s vineyard.
